Arbitration in a Sustainable World?

The Campaign for Greener Arbitrations

Travers Smith is proud to have signed the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations’ Green Pledge (the “Green Pledge”). The Campaign for Greener Arbitrations (“CGA”) is a global initiative which aims to raise awareness of the environmental impact of international arbitrations and to reduce the arbitration community’s carbon footprint through the promotion of more environmentally sustainable practices.

20,000
Trees could be required to offset the carbon emissions resulting from just one medium-large scale arbitration

The need for behavioural change is highlighted by a CGA study, which estimated that just under 20,000 trees could be required to offset the carbon emissions resulting from just one medium-large scale arbitration. This figure is particularly concerning in circumstances where the Law Commission estimates that there are at least 5,000 domestic and international arbitrations in England and Wales every year.

By signing the Green Pledge, Travers Smith has committed to make efforts to comply with the following Guiding Principles (click on each tile to find out more):

The Guiding Principles of the Green Pledge align with our ESG intent. It is right that arbitration practitioners look to minimise the environmental impact of their work and we look forward to working with both fellow practitioners and our clients to support this really important initiative.
